And when has Apple ever got there first? Definitely not with portable media players or phones.

Then that is a completely different porposition.
However I would say the following:
1) Services are not Apple’s forte
2) Uber likely to get there first.

I think autonomous vehicles will not be reality before 2030.

A big assumption in your analysis is that Apples go-to-market strategy is the same as existing automakers.

What if Apple sells a premium door-to-door transportation service to consumers, not the vehicle itself? What kind of margins can you have on an autonomous vehicle service that has > 90% utilization, as opposed to < 10% utilization of costly and cumbersome vehicle ownership?

All indications I have seen is that Apple is not targeting a product release before 2020, that gives time for autonomous tech and regulation to mature.
