I agree but I thought people were replacing their hardware less often now than any time in the modern PC age.

actually less than you think. The vast majority of windows sales come from a new machine where the new lisence fee is inluded in the price. Hence I dont think that the affect will be that big.

Microsoft has also chosen in the short term to give away windows 10 upgrades; a large short term hit to revenue. if customers end up hooked then they may need to make it free for even more upgrades and reduce upgrade cycle even further annoying the oems and hitting their cash cow.
