I agree with the rest of your post, but the definition of “excellent” cannot be “lousy, but it could be even worse”. There is already a phrase for that: “better than expected”.

Everything is about relative to expectations. The term excellent is in itslef a relative description. Relative to what was expected, these businesses all had an excellent quarter.

Umm, Surface sales indicate less than a million tablets, very low gross margins and an overall loss once fixed costs are included. Lumia’s ASP is calculated to be about $110 (or maybe a little higher if dumb phone business is winding down faster.) Neither is good, let alone excellent.
